Nice under used park with a decent beach, trails, and interesting views of the border wall. The parks currently only open on weekends to cars ($7), but you can park at the entrance and walk to the beach which is about a mile from the entrance. Usually it’s pretty empty including the beach. There is a big area for horse back riding. There’s even a place nearby which will take you out for a ride in the beach. It looked like a fun thing to do.
Lots of law enforcement in the area including Border Guards, Sherries deputy’s, and Law enforce the Rangers.
I found some of the navy’s trash (manuals) and phosphorus ordinance of some kind. They were a decent size being about a foot long and about 8” around. I thought it was strange that when I reported them to the lady (Ranger)at the entrance she was indifferent. Hopefully they aren’t dangerous.
While visiting San Diego, you must take the time to visit Border Field State Park. Not only is it cool to say you have been to the furthest southwest corner of the USA, you can also see this beautiful beach that feels very “remote” despite being so close to a major metropolitan area. But the most important reason to visit is to experience the humanity of it all, realize Mexico is our friend and ally and just over that wall. It’s sad how militarized the wall is on our side - we can’t get anywhere near it while on the Mexico side they are enjoying life and walking right up to it. It really helps give you perspective!
The most southwestern land in the continental United States. If you’re in San Diego, this short detour is worth it just for the experience. Details follow.
This is a California State Park and costa around 7$ to enter. There are bathrooms, picnic tables, and areas to relax and look at the water. I don’t advise swimming here as the current is strong and there is runoff pollution from the nearby TJ river. Confirmed by border patrol. There are CBP agents patrolling here so it’s relatively safe. You can hear the music playing across the border wall and if you look, there are friendly faces looking back at you as they’re also looking into the United States as you look into Mexico!
Worth the trip!
It was a fun, productive morning walk from the parking site to the actual border wall. The actual park is closed due to Covid (even on the weekends from 10-2) but it’s a spectacular view from there. There is a buffer and you cannot touch the fence. There is constant border patrol all around but it’s quite interesting to see the party and people on the Tijuana side. We had one border patrol agent come up to us and talk to us about the current situation and what usually goes on and it was the highlight of the walk. I would recommend coming down from San Diego if you have the chance.
Really cool walking along the road that goes right up to the border wall. Currently some of the road/path is flooded due to recent rainfall so be advised and follow signage that indicates an alternative route to beach etc.
There is really not too much to this state park but I liked it. First time seeing the mexican border was something different to see. There is some dolphins every now and then, not too close to the shore. I found the park to be a little bit small for my liking specially since you are paying 7 dollars if you drive. Beach is quieter than the other side of imperial beach, the other side of the mexican border might not be.
Definitely worth the time to check this place out. If you go during the week you can take a long beautiful walk from the main parking lot to the border fence at the beach. Very quit, and secluded. The beach is beautiful and the area is surprisingly very clean. Lots of Border Patrol agents, who are all very nice. You can also rent horses and ride along the sandy beach. Cool place to explore, and the new wall system separating the United States and Mexico is impressive.
I'm only writing this review to let people know you probably don't want to swim along this stretch of beach. The Tijuana River flows into the ocean nearby and has a lot of waste water and chemical run off from Mexico. You can smell it sometimes when you drive over the nearby bridge before you get into the park. I know they are trying to get a treatment plant to help with the smell but I still wouldn't want to swim.
